Trained as a soldier on the island of Mintarn, he traveled to Neverwinter as part of a mercenary company that serves as both army and city watch. Balin grew disillusioned with his fellow soldiers, who seemed to enjoy their authority at the expense of the people they’re supposed to protect. Everything came to a head recently, when he disobeyed an order and followed his conscience. He was suspended from active duty, but kept his rank and connection to the mercenaries. Since then, he has devoted himself to his deity.
His Divine Domain is Life, which is affiliated with many gods of good. Balin’s god is Marthammor Duin, the dwarf god of wanderers, travelers, and outcasts—those who move among strange lands and foreign people. Balin always wears a necklace of silver and iron, with the holy symbol of Marthammor Duin, a boot overlaid by an upright mace.
Balin’s conscience, not law and authority, will guide him to do the right thing. Power is meant to be used for the benefit of all, not to oppress the weak.
He is always polite and respectful, but doesn’t trust his gut feelings and tends to wait for others to act. He secretly wonders whether the gods care about mortal affairs at all.
